AI Engineer Salary in 2026: USA vs India and 5 IT Careers Compared

What can an AI engineer with around five years of experience earn in 2026? This comparison looks at salary guide estimates for the USA and India, alongside four other in-demand IT careers and the skills employers value.

AI engineer salary in 2026: USA vs India

A salary guide can help with early research, but it cannot tell you exactly what one person will earn. Pay changes with location, company, experience, skills, and what the employer includes in its compensation package.

For the USA, Robert Half’s 2026 guide lists AI/ML engineer salaries from $134,000 to $193,250, with a midpoint of $170,750. These are national starting salary benchmarks grouped into low, mid, and high bands—not a specific estimate for every engineer with five years of experience.

For India, Michael Page’s 2026 guide gives a broad ₹30–60 lakh per year range for new-age AI and machine learning roles in its relevant 3–6-year experience band. The range varies by employer type and sector. It should not be read as a typical offer for every city or company.

These figures are not a direct like-for-like comparison. The US guide uses low, mid, and high salary bands; the India guide groups salaries by years of experience and employer segment. Total compensation may also include bonuses, equity, or other benefits.

Five IT career salary benchmarks

RoleUSA salary guide rangeIndia salary guide range
AI/ML engineer$134,000–$193,250₹30–60 LPA
Data engineer$127,000–$180,750₹25–45 LPA
Cybersecurity engineer$118,500–$190,750₹35–50 LPA
DevOps engineer$118,000–$173,750₹25–55 LPA
Software engineer$109,250–$175,500₹30–60 LPA

The US ranges are Robert Half’s 2026 national low-to-high starting salary benchmarks. India ranges are broad guide bands for relevant experience levels; they do not all use the same years-of-experience bracket. Actual offers can fall outside these ranges.

What the numbers mean for someone with five years of experience

Five years on a résumé does not automatically place someone at the top of a salary range. Employers also look at the work a person has owned and the results they can explain.

For an AI engineer, that might mean describing how they prepared data, evaluated model quality, deployed a feature, monitored it, or controlled cost. For a data engineer, it could be a reliable pipeline; for a cybersecurity engineer, a security improvement; and for a DevOps engineer, a more reliable deployment process.

When comparing offers, check the role expectations, location, base salary, bonus, equity, benefits, and whether the quoted figure is annual salary or total compensation.

The 2026 trend

Robert Half’s 2026 guide projects salary growth of 4.1% for AI/ML engineers and data scientists, compared with 2.3% for software and application development and 1.7% for data engineering, analytics, and reporting. These are guide projections, not a promise of an individual raise.

In India, TeamLease Digital’s FY2026–27 primer describes employers moving from simply adopting AI tools toward building, operating, securing, and governing AI systems. That points to continued value in practical skills across AI, data, cloud, and security.

The useful takeaway is not that one job title guarantees a high salary. It is that employers value people who can apply their skills to real projects and clearly explain what they delivered.
